When we used to go, it was busy, but not as crowded as it gets now. There are still places where time seems to stand still. In this lovely little village. Many happy memories here. Genealogy told us our family came from Grassmere and Martindale. So this is a home-from-home, in reality.

The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, located in the Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, Florida, is an exquisite example of Mediterranean Revival architecture infused with Italian Renaissance influences. Built between 1914 and 1922 as the winter residence of industrialist James Deering, Vizcaya encompasses 34 decorated rooms filled with European antiques and art dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The estate originally spanned 180 acres, although today it covers approximately 50 acres, with 10 acres of formal gardens, extensive native woodlands, & a historic village outbuildings compound.

The waterfront at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami features a unique stone barge designed to resemble a ship. Built to create a picturesque view and act as a breakwater, this ship-like structure enhances the estate’s Mediterranean Revival aesthetic. The barge, adorned with sculptures and decorative elements, appears to be a stationary vessel docked at the estate, adding to Vizcaya's charm and providing a serene ambiance. This distinctive feature reflects James Deering's vision of blending art with the natural landscape, contributing to the estate’s allure as a historic masterpiece.
